 Your absence hurts

Kael

It's been a week since Brid disappeared. Wind and I are a mess. He needs his mate and I need mine. Or at least know that they are okay. I have so many things in my head that I am not thinking rationally. The love of my life was accused of treason, and I don't know what to believe. The photos say it all, but there is something that does not add up. Or is it the desire to find something to justify her behaviour? Brid, why can't I feel you? What happened so that our unbreakable connection no longer exists? Why Brid, why? I gave you and shared everything with you. You lacked nothing. You had all the love a man could offer. I would die for you, my love.

“WHY?” I screamed, hitting the desk with my fist.

I have thought and tried to remember a time when she was not satisfied with something. Yet, I return empty-handed. She always showed what she felt. She couldn't hide what was going through her mind from me. I could read it so well that there were times when I knew she wanted it before she said it. Where did I fail?

“Brid”

I stared at a small pink stuffed rabbit that I have on my desk. It was from Brid. My mind began to wander the moment she first set foot in my house.

“We are here, this is your new home.” Turning off the car's engine, I saw Brid from the corner of my eye. Her face was puzzled, and from where I stood, her eyes shone with admiration and disbelief at the same time. She turned to me, saying, “Kael, will I live here?”

The excitement in her voice was evident. I smiled and nodded my head. She returned her gaze to the front, “Wow, it's huge.”

Her reaction filled us with pride. Wind was pushing his chest out, knowing that we were providing for our mate. That was very important to us. We wanted the best for her. I took her by the hand, and she turned her gaze towards me.

“You will not only live here, you are the owner and mistress of everything that is mine.”

Brid's lip began to tremble, and her eyes filled with tears. Wind and I were shocked by this. What did I say to make her so sad? However, Brid surprised me again. She took my hand in hers and brought it to her lips. I stilled without reacting, not knowing what to do at that moment.

Brid kissed the palm of my hand with such a feeling that my heart was torn in two at that moment. One part belonged to my mate, and the other would stay with me. Brid released my hand and wiped her tears with the sleeve of her jumper, then said, “Kael, I have nothing to offer you. However, what I can do is give you my unconditional loyalty, and love. I will be with you every step of the way until the day my body breathes no more.”

She then grabbed her handbag and opened it. From it, she took out a small pink rabbit. She stared at him for a few seconds and then set her gaze on me again.

“I've had this rabbit since before I can remember. It has always been with me through thick and thin. It has given me the strength to overcome the obstacles that I have had to face. There is not a day of my life that does not carry it with me. It has always protected me and put the lucky star in my path. But now, I no longer need it because I have you.”

My heart jumped several times. As an Alpha, I am responsible for all members of my pack, but the level of trust that Brid is offering me is beyond my fantasy.

She extended her arm towards me with the rabbit, handing it to me. The realization of what she was doing hits me hard. With this, I was accepting that Brid would only trust me. That now I would be the one to bring the star of good luck to her. I accepted it without hesitation.

I reached for the rabbit and grabbed it. Ever since Brid gave it to me, I've had it with me on this desk. I left it here, as a reminder that the life and happiness of my mate were in my hands. That I accept to be her support and the force that will move her universe.

Returning the teddy to its place, I heard Conrad through the mental link “Alpha, we have a clue, but it is not in the southern forest. You need to come immediately.”

I stood up from the chair abruptly, and my heart started pounding, hitting my rib cage. I turned to look at the rabbit immediately, and without taking my eyes off it, I said, “I'll be right there, Conrad.” With that, I turned around and left my office.

Conrad didn't have to tell me where they were, I could easily track them with their smell. By setting foot outside my house, Wind took control. My clothes went flying everywhere because his urge to hunt down our mate overwhelmed him. Anyway, this way it would be faster and could cover more territory in less time. Not to mention that my senses will multiply compared to my human form. My bones contorted giving way to the animal, my skin began to develop fur, and my teeth became deadly weapons.

Wind raised its muzzle to the sky, howling. With this, he was declaring to the other members of the pack, that the hunt had just begun. Wasting no more time, he detected the scent of the trackers, heading for them at top speed. It took us ten minutes to get to where they were.

Conrad was the first to notice me. He was talking to Matthew, a wolf who stands out among many for his hunting skills. It was them, the best we had in the Ghost Fang pack. Next to him were Richard and Marco. They were both under his training and command. Those two were building a reputation in the pack.

Conrad noticed that I had already arrived and signalled for me with his hand to go where they were. As I walked towards them, I was transformed into a man, until I was on my feet.

“Conrad, Matthew, Guys.” I greeted them briefly. I am more interested in knowing what they discovered than in socializing.

“Alpha, good morning,” Matthew replied.

“What do we have?” Although on the outside I looked calm, on the inside I was dying to know something about my mate.
