 Keep looking

Kael

“Alpha, the boys, and I headed immediately to the south side, specifically next to the fruit trees, where Fatima told us everything happened.” Matthew pointed his finger to the south side of the forest and returned his gaze to me again.

“We did not find anything, no footprints, traces, or essences. Neither Luna, Toni, nor Fátima has been there recently.” Chills ran through my body. Now more than ever, I needed to find Brid.

“Alpha, maybe Fatima got everything mixed up. Your presence is intimidating and for a wolf, even more so.” Conrad intervened.

“Yes, I know, even so, it's hard to believe that she was mistaken about something so obvious and fundamental. What else did you find out?” I turned to see everyone anxiously. This was the first time that I would know something about what happened that day.

At that moment, in the distance, we heard a howl. “It's Christopher, Alpha, and looks like he found something,” Matthew said, sure of himself.

We all turned north, Christopher's wolf hurtling toward us. A few steps from where we were, he transformed into a human and walked until he reached us.

He bowed his head in respect. “Alpha, I bring news, and they are not good.” My body froze, and my arms felt numb as if a force was sucking the energy out of me. I have to regain my composure at all costs. I am the Alpha of this pack and I have to be biased, even though Brid is my mate and Luna. Justice must be applied in the same way for all members.

Wind growled from within my gut, and he disagreed. My wolf wanted to go and get her mate and bring her back at any cost. The surrounding wolves heard Wind and lowered their heads. Matthew cleared his throat and spoke, “Christopher, what made you come back all of a sudden?”

“Yes, Matthew, Alpha, going north, I discovered the essence of Luna. She was not alone, I could smell Fatima and Toni too.” Christopher gulped and looked nervous, which scared me.

“Please continue,” I told him. He nodded his head and carry one, “I followed the trail, and it led me to the entrance of the cursed forest.” What Christopher said, we received it with silence, losing our ability to speak.

“Are you sure of that, Christopher? Could you have been mistaken?”

Christopher shook his head, “No beta, the trail is clear. I also discovered signs of struggle, and what confused me the most was when only two sets of footprints made their way up the cursed hill. The third person vanished. I found no trace.”

Wind came out of nowhere, his anger unleashed, forcing the transformation. Without me being able to do something to prevent it, my body gave way to the powerful Alpha of the white fang pack. Wind gave a ferocious howl, and the surrounding wolves transformed that instant. Their Alpha was summoning them.

He raised his nose to the air, trying to catch the trail Christopher had left when he got here. Wind detected it immediately and lunged at full speed. The six wolves were close behind, with my powerful wolf honouring his name. Wind howled occasionally, letting me know they were with me.

A short time later, we arrived at the place Christopher was talking about. Once there, Wind immediately detected Brid's scent, and that was not all. Leaf was here too. The land smelled of violence. Brid transformed to defend herself. I can smell it and feel it. What could have happened here? Wind gave a great howl, lifting his head to the sky. His mate was missing. The other wolves joined in his pain. Humans and wolves see things differently. He wants his mate back. Unlike us, we have laws, and we must follow them. Brid is being accused of something terrible.

My heart was filled with immense sadness when I remembered those photos. That was surely Brid. I can't believe what I saw so far, thinking that something terrible had to have happened for her to do something like that. But those images don't lie. Wind howled, calling for his mate. But only silence received him. From where we were, beneath the mountain, I looked up. It will take us a few hours to get there. Wind, without wasting any more time, launched himself towards where the trail of presences intensified.

The others followed me, and even though they knew where we were going, they were faithful to me. The cursed forest, where many have ventured, yet only a few have returned. Those who managed to return arrived with horrendous stories. Trees coming to life, hurricane-force winds capable of knocking you to the ground. Some spoke of being trapped in the dark, unable to escape for days. And some other lurid stories. That is what we were dealing with. And if Brid got in there, I had to find her as soon as possible. She was still my mate and I swore to protect her. And Wind, he wouldn't let me do anything else.

My wolf turned to see the others, and in them, he saw the camaraderie between wolves. He howled again, letting everyone around him know that the Alpha of the Ghost Fang pack was hunting in the area.
