Something Smells Bad
Kael
From my window, like a coward, I see my mate being guided to the cells, where she will remain until the day of her trial. I clenched my fists, trying to contain my anger. This situation is terrible and painful. I never imagined this scenario, in which the entire pack would gather to see their Luna imprisoned. Until a few days ago, this same pack sought my mate's help and advice. Now only cruel and reproachful words come out of their mouths. And I cannot do anything to prevent it. It is the law of the wolf. Me, leaving her there, I am doing the same.
My mate, at a certain point, turned in my direction. I knew that she would, and from here, I could see her pain. But now, I know why I couldn't feel it before. She lost Leaf. Wind can't get over it. He is out of control. He wants to go find her and return to where she belongs, no matter what. I also noticed something disturbing, he intends to punish Brid. According to him, it's her fault that Leaf isn't here.
What to do for this to end well? I know that there is something that I do not know. Moreover, I know that Fatima and Toni are not telling the truth. I have to find out what they are hiding. However, the hardest thing to believe in all of this is Brid's best friend. They have been together, since childhood. No one would behave like this in the face of the suffering of a loved one.
When Christopher took me to the place where my mate and his friends were, I detected an odour that was not natural. A smell of medicine. What could that have been? It was almost imperceptible. However, Wind detected it. I need to investigate all this further. And now that Brid is back, I know that she will be safe here. That way I can move without worrying.
A knock on the door brought me out of my thoughts. I turned away from the window and left my room. The same I shared with my mate until a week ago. I went downstairs and headed for the door. I already knew who he was without seeing him, Conrad. Opening the door, I saw him standing in front of me with a rigid posture.
“Alpha,” I let him pass. Without further ceremony, he stepped inside, and I led him into my living room, where we sat.
“Alpha, Luna is already in the cells, Simon asked me to tell you that he would take care of her.”
That's good, I wouldn't expect anything less from Simon.
“Well, how is she?” My throat knotted when I imagined my mate alone in a dark cell, without me. Sadly, I can't do anything about it.
“She's fine Alpha, so far, she hasn't said anything. Hopefully, with a little more time, Simon can get something out of her.”
I nodded my head, fixing my gaze on Conrad, I was hesitating to tell him that Brid lost Leaf. But it is better to let him know now. He has to know.
“Conrad, Brid lost Leaf.”
The look he gave me was one of disbelief. “How is it possible for something like that to happen? I've never heard of something like this in my entire life.”
“Neither do I and to be honest, I have no idea what could have caused that.”
“Alpha, with all due respect, I believe that fate punished Luna for her betrayal. I can't think of anything else that would justify the loss or death of a Wolf.”
Yes, what he is saying makes sense; however, it is not enough. I have to know and be sure of everything that is happening. Despite everything, Brid is still my mate and Luna and until the council finds her guilty, I have to gather all the evidence to try to help her.
“Conrad, Leaf, was the only one who could project what happened through the mental link. Now that she's not here, we have to look for clues.” Conrad looked at me like I was crazy.
“Kael, don't tell me that you want to help her even though she betrayed you with another Wolf? The laws are very specific and clear about it.”
I closed my eyes, trying to forget Brid's face when we found her in the woods. At the precise moment when I turned around and left. That pierced my heart. What kind of mate was I? Despite what Brid did, we all deserve to be heard at least. I didn't do that, I just turned around and left. But I also have my reasons for not approaching her. Wind.
“I need your help, Conrad. Something doesn't sound right in all of this.
There's a lot of confusion and information that doesn't add up.” I notice what Conrad was going to say, but I didn't let him. “And I know what you are going to say, that I intimidate any Wolf, but this time, it’s not the case. There is something tricky in all this, and I need to know and figure it out. Put two wolves to follow Fatima and Toni. I don't want them to know that they are being followed. Don’t take your eyes off them for a second. I want details, Conrad, details.”
“Good, Alpha, if you believe there is foul play, then, we will investigate. However, Kael, I find it incredible that her best friends from childhood did such a thing. They even switched packs to follow her.”
“Yes, Conrad, that's true, but people change.”
“I won't say anything else and do as you say. But what will you do if your theory is true?”
“What would I do?” I was silent for a few moments. Conrad was watching me closely, I looked back at him. I'd be in a lot of trouble with my mate, and in this case, I would have been one for betraying her. Locked up and treated as a criminal, to later be sentenced to death.
Death, death. No, what am I doing? My mate can die. The realization hit me hard. What if she is innocent? I will have sent her to the slaughterhouse without. NO. Conrad was waiting for my answer. Filling my lungs with air, I answered him.
“I would kneel in front of her every day until she forgave me.”
Conrad's expression had no name. I am an Alpha, and Alphas do not kneel before anyone.
