 You're the Second

Kael

Brid released my hand and put it at her side. Afterward, she rolled into a fetal position and closed her eyes. Her tears started to come out, wetting her cheeks. I couldn't see her like that any more, I wanted to say and do many things, but we had little time. The full moon will be in three days, and all we have to do is take Brid to Salima. She assured me that she would take care of everything.

“I'm going to bring you food, it should be ready.” I got up from the bed, but Brid didn't say anything, nor did she move from her position. I shook my head, thinking this will be more difficult than I had thought. The only thing I could think of to cheer her up was to assure her over and over again that she is my mate, and that everything will be fine in the end.

I went to the kitchen, and Amanda was sitting having a coffee. Her presence took me by surprise. I had completely forgotten that she was here. When she saw me, she put the cup of coffee on the table. “Did you bring her here? With me? What do you intend to do with both of us? Do you realize what the wolves will say about this?”

Amanda got up and walked over to me. A few inches away from me, she stopped. “You are playing with fire, Kael. You cannot have two wolves in the same house. I demand respect, In the same way as you.” Amanda pointed her finger in Brid's direction. “She has to go.”

Anger like I had never felt before washed over me. Who does she think she is to come between me and my mate? Wind was on the surface, turning the colour of my eyes. My fangs lowered, and the air smelled of challenge.

Amanda widened her eyes in surprise and took several steps back. She lowered her head and uncovered her neck. This was not enough for Wind. He howled in such a way that he brought her to her knees.

“Who are you to give me orders?” I said, half talking and half growling.

“Sorry A-lpha, it was not my intention. Forgive me, I will not cross the line again.” Amanda said, stuttering. Fear dripped from her pores.

I walked over to her and squatted down, grabbed her hair, and lifted her face. “It doesn't matter who you are, or what title you have. No one will come between me and my mate. Do you understand, Amanda?”

She bobbed her head, and that was enough to appease Wind's anger and mine. I released her and stood up. I went to the cupboard and took out two plates. Filled them with the food that I had previously cooked and put them on a tray, I grabbed it and was about to leave, but changed my mind. I turned to her, still on the floor.

“Amanda, I am sorry that things are not going as you had expected. I did not choose you to be my mate, but Luna of the Ghost Fang pack. One day, you will find your mate, and you will understand. No one will ever be able to take Brid's place. No one.” With that said, I turned around and went to where my mate was.

When I entered, she was still in the same position, but she was no longer crying. I put the tray on the nightstand and sat on the bed next to her.

“She is right, Kael. You made your choice. Now you will have to live with it.” Brid surprised me with what she said, but that was it. She didn't say anything else. I knew it was difficult for her, but I would pay any price to save my mate's life.

Without giving her a chance at anything, I helped her sit up. I reached across the plate and put it on my lap.

“You don't have to do this, Kael.”

I sighed deeply, “No, you're right, I don't have to. However, I want to do it.” I broke the meat into pieces and raised the fork to her mouth. Brid opened it and I shoved the food inside. I did this a couple more times until I noticed Brid's eyes shedding tears out of nowhere. I put down the fork on the plate and raised my hand to wipe her tears away. Mine started to water, but I already stopped them in time. I can't show weakness now. Brid needs me and I have to be her support.

“Why did you believe everything they said about me?” I stood still, trying to understand the question, but more than anything I did not know what to answer. I took Brid's two hands, and said, “There was a time when I didn't know what to think. The photos that Fatima showed me broke my soul. Efficiently confusing my mind. I would rather not consider them true, even though the proof was in front of me. And after Toni confessed, and he corroborated what Fatima said, My brain went dark. Wind was losing control, mostly because he couldn't feel Leaf.”
